Harnessing AI Prompts: HKIIT Empowers Teachers of the Visually Impaired to Advance Accessible Education

Committed to supporting underprivileged communities through artificial intelligence (AI), a team of HKIIT staff and students recently hosted a workshop for teachers at the Ebenezer School & Home for the Visually Impaired. Titled "A New Vibe in AI Teaching: Mastering GitHub Copilot Prompts for Daily Education", the workshop was designed to help educators grasp the core technologies of generative AI. By learning to translate their pedagogical logic into effective AI prompts, the teachers can now more easily design accessible learning materials tailored to the needs of visually impaired students.

Led by Mr Cyrus WONG, Programme Leader of the Higher Diploma in Cloud and Data Centre Administration and Senior Lecturer at HKIIT, the session centred around the concept of "Vibe Coding". HKIIT students stepped into the role of teaching assistants, demonstrating to the Ebenezer teachers how to master "Prompt Engineering" using the free AI coding assistant, GitHub Copilot—even without any prior coding experience. For instance, with just a few simple instructions, the AI assistant can automatically generate interactive web materials complete with full Aria-labels. This allows teachers to transform printed text and images into web-based eye-tracking games, significantly enhancing accessible learning for their students.

The workshop not only streamlined the preparation of teaching materials but also highlighted how VPET can give back to society through innovative technology. Following the session, a fruitful exchange on future collaborations took place among key stakeholders. Attendees included Mr Raymond CHENG, Chairperson of the HKIIT Advisory Board; Ir Dr John HUI, VTC Chief Digital Officer cum Principal of HKIIT; Mr Keith YEUNG, VTC Director of the Information Technology Office; Mr Cyrus WONG, HKIIT Senior Lecturer; Ms Tammy WONG, Principal of Ebenezer New Hope School; as well as representatives from the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) and other industry partners, alongside the Ebenezer teaching staff. Thanks to HKIIT’s networking efforts, industry and banking representatives generously donated computers and other educational equipment to the Ebenezer School. Moving forward, HKIIT aims to continue leveraging its IT expertise to connect with the community, break down barriers through technology, and foster a more inclusive educational environment.
