Coding Classroom Embraces the Smart Era to Guide Youth in Exploring Creative Technology

CEU collaborated for the first time with YOUTH COMMON, together with students of the Higher Diploma in AI and Mobile Applications Development and the Higher Diploma in Software Engineering at the Hong Kong Institute of Information Technology (HKIIT), to organise a "Robotics Coding Creative Workshop" for young people. This workshop continued CEU's "Community Classroom" initiative for the academic year. During the event, HKIIT students acted as mentors, using fun mini-games and workshop activities to introduce basic coding concepts and applications to participants interested in coding.

Participants utilised their smartphones to tackle multiple levels of a maze game, learning the underlying logic of coding commands. HKIIT students also brought along AI Robo Dogs, allowing participants to compete in teams to quickly input coding commands and control the robots to complete designated tasks. By the end of the competition, both teams successfully accomplished their missions, experiencing the engaging aspects of coding and STEM education.

The participants came from different age groups and diverse backgrounds, including secondary school students, tertiary students, and working youth who were not specialised in IT but recognised the practical importance of technology in today’s society, which motivated them to join this workshop. They greatly appreciated the creativity and patience of HKIIT students, noting that the game-based teaching approach made it easier to grasp coding principles and sparked their interest in further learning.

HKIIT student LO Ka-yin expressed his joy in interacting with other young people interested in programming as a mentor. He also appreciated the active engagement and questions from the participants, which inspired him to continue participating in community service and contributing his knowledge.

Mr Stephen CHUA, Chairman of the Hong Kong United Youth Association, praised HKIIT students for sharing their knowledge with other youth. He expressed satisfaction with the event's success in introducing coding to a wider audience and awarded certificates of appreciation to HKIIT students in recognition of their contributions.
